Ahhh, yes! Those are fond memories indeed! From a storytelling standpoint, I really like this scene. It’s a great example of “showing” the reader not just “telling” the reader about Syrys and his childhood stick. It makes me relate better to Syrys when I start thinking about the simple things that entertained me as a child.
I’ve got a few rock-climbing friends, and that cliff-pic just makes me scratch my head. Where is his rope?? Everyone knows you can’t go on adventures without the 50-feet rope!
I have to say I adore this montage pic of Syrys’ youth. Interesting hair style, too, the chopped-flat topknot. Feels almost young Samurai-ish.
As to the adult Syrys’ face, I adore it, too, as here he no longer looks tired and instead looks youthful still and a fair bit happy. It’s one of those looks I would yearn to see on his face more often, were I to be near him.
Artistically and thematically, this montage is perhaps one of the best I’ve seen in a long long while. Thank you, Tiff, for being so kind as to share it with us.
I’d love to see more on that spotty shadow Shivae! :3 maybe a bonus? And I have a stick just like that! I used it to know dead twigs out of a tree today! Later I’m taking it fishing. XD

It’s not actually a Shivae, it’s a big wing called a Starwing. 🙂 I’ve written them into the Shivae! scripts I’m working on, but might show them in Darius at some point, although I didn’t really plan on it. They’re a nocturnal pack hunter.
I wanna guess that Syrys won’t have to pass the stick on … Either there will be a package from Syrys that he doesn’t remember wrapping… Or Grandfather has found another uniquely clever gift.

I think the “hanging off the cliff” scenario is only defined as fun because he had the stick and didn’t fall.
Anybody want to bet if Syrys is gonna pass that stick onto Darius now?
