Grandfather is the Alpha of the pack(iirc), and Darius is still a cub at this time. Given a pack mentality, that is a sign of earned and deserved respect.
Grandfather is an alpha. He has the authority to tell the kitchen staff that Darius will get no chicken of any kind for a month. Plus, he can just have Syrys beat Darius up for him, so he has no need of Yoda style fighting.
Grandfather probably fights more like Kel anyway. Or is that the other way around?
I think it’s true liking and respect. Darius is too happy in the third panel for it not to be! To me, everything about his expression and body language says he wants -grandfather’s- approval, not just the alpha wolf’s. 🙂
Darius’ happiness at seeing Grandfather is obvious, but he isn’t the only one who feels great affection for him. Grandfather is also centuries old and getting frail- not good to tackle him!
This strip reveals a lot about Grandfather – he inspires both formal respect and love from those around him.

Or more likely Darius’ grandfather kicks ass kinda like how Yoda wooped Count Duku. He’s old, but still a genetic elite, and a Akaelae.
