The complex in general looks like natural caves that have been cleaned out and expanded. If that’s true, there could be lots of little, natural side passages, depending on the kind of rock strata they’re in. Lots of little, natural side passages could also mean things are unstable…
Plus, they were made long ago and Rama’s forces probably don’t even know the full extent of the tunnels in the first place. So Darius’ knowledge of those little side tunnels is that much more significant.
