  1. No! Don’t go soft guard, don’t go soft! It’s a ploy I tell you.

  2. Quinn certainly possesses a little bit of glibness, no?

It also seems like the boys haven’t taken a liking to our friendly floating Troublecoon either. There’s a song out there for girls like Quinn. You’ll get a cookie if you can guess what it is!

  3. argh, nightwatch…

  4. KHGV Defenestration

Between the local wildlife, and gun-armed criminals, a club would probably be a much more practical choice of weapon – atleast then you can use it to subdue, whereas a sword’s only real use, aside from intimidation, is in the application of deadly force, which given the above, is something it has no business trying to do(and anyone who suggests attacking a resisting criminal with your sword with the aim of ‘only wounding’ them, is officially banned from associating with pointy objects, much less actual weapons).

I can understand not giving young guards firearms, especially if you lack a responsible gun culture(and if you have one, then you can probably trust most 12 year olds with a rifle, unsupervised – not that you would, but you could), but the choice of swords has to have a root in their culture, not practicality.

The bit about not being able to draw guns, tho, is easily solved. EYE BEAMS! πŸ˜€

Oh, and Gmwolf? The bit about the radio? You have a rifle, and you have one weapon, which you have to reveal yourself to use, and get fairly close. If I have a radio, I can drop a thousand pound bomb on you from behind a bush five kilometers away, or rain rockets and shells on your position – the air force and artillery corps at my command. πŸ˜€

…yeah, been offline the last week, just catching up. Sorry.

  5. Chythar does seem fairly young here — if we can trust his size relative to the kittens (they seem to be the same sort of cat), he’s only a few years older than them.

Remember that even close to the Mounty “palace”, they’re in pretty wild territory. Most dangerous critters in the area are large, have big teeth and really tough hides – if you can’t have a gun, a sword would be nice to have — plus a sword *can* be used as a basic survival tool in a pinch, if it’s not too long (think a rather awkward machete) – while a club is only good to whack or poke something with and is short. A quarterstaff or bo would be much better than a simple club. Probably most practical would be a quarterstaff with metal ends with a strong armor piercing type point at one end, plus a long belt knife of some sort.

  6. AHHHHHH! Mind controll, she’s using mind controll.

    One second Chythar
(as in Chy In CS? Celinas short lived crush?) Is all tough and all
“YOU SHOULDEN’T BE OUT HERE ALONE!” And the next second he’s all soft.

  7. Wow, for someone so seemingly young, Cythar acts pretty mature and responsible.

  8. That’s a bit of a mood swing, from “threatening, don’t cross me” attitude to all happy and cheerfulness. Its like Quinn’s personality can infect people! RUN!?!?!

  9. KHGV Defenestration

Where are you folks getting him going soft? He seems to be in “I’m in charge!” mode here; maybe a little flustered, but otherwise quite assertive.

As for the wild critters, frankly, I have no idea why, in universe, they tolerate people-eaters so much, especially in areas their children tend to wander – you think they’d kill or relocate those which display aggression toward people or are prone to wandering into or near populated areas(think bear control). But anyway, a stunner of some sort would be much more effective(microwave pain-gun, sonic stunner/neuron-jammer, UV electro-laser taser, etc. etc. – plenty of options) than a sword – especially if you realise that bear spray is a more effective defence against bears than a rifle, if you look at the statistics, and then compare a rifle to a sword… then factor in the kind of big nasties lurk in Cyantia’s forests.

Tho it’s entirely possible, even probable, the sword is just mostly for show(+cultural value), plus maybe utility in a pinch. There’s no reason he couldn’t also be carrying a collapsible club(they do have them iRL) and small stunner – that coat isn’t exactly ideal for stealthy-agile field work, but it does have plenty of space to stash stuff.

Also, on his age, yeah, I’d say he’s new – waving that short sword around as he is isn’t a very smart thing to do, and kinda pointless. Might suggest he’s a little insecure about his authority as a guard and feels the need to reinforce it, or maybe he’s a little immature or suffering from New Toy Syndrome.

  10. Well, KHGV Defenestration, the radio was a good point πŸ˜€ but everybody looks cool with a sword so, please Tiff, don’t learn to draw guns πŸ™‚

KHGV Defenestration, you normally point with a sword to avoid things with sharp teeth to jump on you πŸ˜€

  11. I like swords better =P They’re simply more epic. I want to see how this turns out ^^

  12. Going soft? Doesn’t look like he’s going soft to me.

@KHGV, I believe the Cyantian cultures, especially near the Mounty territories, are very nonrestrictive when it comes to nature, at least around this point in the story.

I’d say he probably drew the sword because her hovering has intimidated him, so he’s trying to quickly and effortlessly assert his power over her.

Also, about his age, I’m not sure if you quite got this, but since his name and appearance are similar to a minor character in Campus Safari, it’s generally assumed that the two are the same, which would put his age close to the main characters of Akaelae.

  13. Really nice job with Quinn’s arms and really nice work with her eyes Tiff. In a few more minutes the sentinel will leave his sword and start looking for the Demon Horse for her (females eyes… better than Jedis mental control) πŸ˜€

  14. KHGV Defenestration

Gmwolf, your response to me about swords was, um, kinda incoherent. I honestly have no idea what you were trying to say there.

Sirbacon, I have noticed the connection. Tentitive for now, however, unless I missed a confirmation, so I’m not going to take it as a given – that’s just bad science. And while the bluegreens are pretty hands-off with their wildlife, you do have to wonder how many cubs are killed each year as a direct result.

  15. Gmwolf: You speak of the “Most Common Superpower”, possessed by many in both fictional worlds and the real world.

KHGV: I think Gmwolf meant that 1: He thinks swords look cooler than guns. and 2: Swords are used to threaten and/or fend off bitey critters if necessary.

Sirbacon: I get the impression that the areas around Gralen Cragg hall aren’t THAT dangerous. But they’re still dangerous enough that cubs might blunder into a broken ankle or get lost on their own. Bitey critters have been mentioned, but the impression that I get is that the problem is not only kept in check, but also only a problem if said wildlife is bothered or harassed.

  16. KHGV Defenestration

Aye, but in context that would mean he’s suggesting that Chythar thinks Quinn might attack him. Tho I suppose that’s plausible enough – he’s probably been running WTF.exe in the background sense he first spotted her flaunting local gravity regulations.

  17. @KHGV, I’m not going to either, I just wasn’t sure by your comments if you had heard that rumor or not.

It’s hard to tell, but it looks like he’s about the same height as Quinn.

  18. KHGV Defenestration, I mean that you usually hold a sword in front of you to avoid other to jump on you. Usually creatures doesnΒ΄t jump on you if you put between you and them a sharp sword πŸ˜€ and something floating in front of you with female shape is the oldest cliche in terror films about things that manage to kill you after makeing you trust them πŸ™‚

  19. Gmwolf, usually holding out a sword like that only assures you get your arm grabbed/bitten and you end up with one less sword than what you began with. πŸ˜‰ A fully extended arm cannot make movements with enough momentum to make the sword dangerous; it’s a pretty stance to take – and might be intimidating too – but it’s not actually meant for fighting.

But then again, not everything is practical/logical in fiction, or else it could be pretty dull. πŸ˜‰

  20. Big mouth if you loose the sword and the arm πŸ™‚ Big enough to think in running like hell πŸ˜€

  21. it doesn’t look like he’s hlding the sword with a streched arm. also the sword doesn’t look to big.
but i don’t think, syke cared about such details as she made this pic.

  22. Sword => if it’s double edge and you can’t subdue with the back of the sword, use the flat side on the sides (redundant, or is it?) of it to whack people, still as good as any club you can find.
