Humm, I don’t think a rot is a year. That would make Darius around 18, and he should have grown a bit by then. I think it might be months, but I have no real way of checking this, so forgive me if I’m wrong. However, given that Darius is of the Elite class, I have a feeling that the family won’t really worry until he comes into contact with Rama.
Disregard this, as I’ve just found the wiki. 1 rot=13 months. Still, I think Darius needs this time away to learn what he is good at. We know where he’s going, now we’re learning how he got there.

Umm, isn’t a rot the Cyantian equivalent of a year? That’s a lot of time to be gone without your parents caring.
