Yes and no. Controlled fear can indeed be your best friend. It’s why guys in TV shows (and I suspect a lot of real soldiers) say they wouldn’t go into battle with someone who’s not afraid. As you said, it heightens the senses, makes you more aware, and tells your body to be ready to do anything without warning. It also (usually) keeps you from doing something really stupid.
However, if that fear gets loose, then you have a problem. You don’t think clearly. You don’t wait to see the best choice. The obvious choice can be the wrong one. Panic won’t give you time to realize that. It’ll take door #1 every time.
It’s a fine line. Fear under control can be a life saver. If it ever becomes panic, it’ll do just the opposite.
Darius isn’t actually afraid. You remember Darius was baiting wolves much bigger than himself into attacking him since he was smaller and looked less capable. However, he’s not sure where they are and hasn’t had a moment to figure out what he wants to do with someone chasing him. He’s never had someone really trying to hunt him down and he’s also concerned about Artrex.

FEAR fine tunes your reactions.
Confidant fox VS frightened wolf equals Dead Fox.
Fear can be your best friend.

Akaelae is the first Cyantian Chronicles comic I’m serializing in a rewritten, text version. You can read it on Kindle Vella OR via Patreon.
