That seems a little harsh. Yes the shivae got hurt, but it wasn’t fully his fault. Should be more of a lesson that there are things out there to kill him, and that people get hurt when they protect him. That is harsh enough without the insults.
I am going to allow the readers to VOTE on whether Darius gets another chance with his Shivae or it gets rehomed.

I think it should get rehomed. Running away, making your family worry and having them chase you down and almost having your pet die should have some concequences.
Still seems a bit harsh. He is a kid after all, and the training Sy was putting him through was pretty tough. This is almost like Syrys is dressing down a soldier instead of a boy. Does he know when to turn Commander Mode off?
Not to mention that they knew Darius had run away and they just let him go. It’s been awhile, but wasn’t the whole reason they started training the kids because they were worried somebody would come after them? If a kid runs off you don’t just let them go, especially if you’re worried they could be a target. You drag their little butt back home. I would say Syrys is just as responsible for what happened to the shivae as Darius is.
Same. It was like sending the kid to military school, with actually hurting the child (even though they heal really fast) and the kid didn’t like it and ran away with his dog. It isn’t as if he was purposefully torturing the shivae, or really even poorly taking care of it. He only inadvertently put it in harms way due to people attacking him due to what he is and who he is related to. Yes Darius doesn’t always make the right decisions, but he is a child who is being forced to do things he doesn’t want to do. All kids hate being forced to do things even adults don’t like without any of the choice that adults normally have. Why normally giving them some version of a choice helps.
To be honest, I think Darius needs a new teacher. Syrys is just not the right personality to deal with him.

Strange, here I thought Syrus was the one responsible for what happened. After all he drove the kid too hard forcing him to run away then left him running around without anyone to actually watch his back resulting in him being lured into a bloodsport ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ moment. Things wouldn’t have progressed to where they got but for his allowing it to happen and being too much ‘you’re a cub you’ll do as I say and nothing you have to say matters’ dominance games.
