Must be strange having futuristic neighbourhood right next to something akin to seventeenth century slavery.
Unusually, technological development doesn’t preclude the use of slavery as a penal measure. Utilizing it as a criminal punishment falls fairly separate from the use of slavery as an economic prop (a prop which automation and technology in general renders moot fairly quick, past the point of initial investment costs). The utilization of what amounts to slave labor as punishment remains in use even in countries such as the United States, though we do not call it such. All one needs do is look at the use of prison labor, up to and including chain gangs. Work as punishment.
On the other hand, branding would be to me significantly more barbaric, due to the sheer trauma incurred by such. I have personally seen small “cosmetic” brands gotten by some folk, and they NEVER look good, despite their (to me inordinate) pride in them. To have such thrust upon one, with the lifetime scarification, would be awful. To have it large enough to be seen in public, too, makes it worse. The medical complications alone disturb me.
