Nope. You just needed an intermediary to break through the fear. A cute pet apparently works well in that role. But then, these are cubs. Sometimes a non-logical, non-straight forward approach is the best.
As a parent, the key to breaking a kid out of a fixation is DISTRACTION. Oh the number of times I did this to Kim and still do on occasion… and she’s a teenager now.

Some adults need it too. Gets the brain out of its rut so it can see something other than what it expects.
