I should explain some things. :) Darrik was quite happy to get a gryphon, but he has OTHER reasons that are bothering him that came up recently. I'm not going to explain until the last comic, because it ruins it and you can't really read this in a single pass at the moment to understand.
By the way, he's old enough to take care of one, but his parents do supervise and make sure they are taken care of. Gryphons aren't easy to come by on Earth.
