Campus Safari Chapter 4 Page 4

Summer is my WORST season for getting things done and this one has been worse than others.  Still... I GOT AN UPDATE DONE!!!  I've promised Kim I will not work from August 18 through the 24th and do a bunch of stuff with her.  There won't be any updates on that week.  If you have some art or something you'd like to toss at me, feel free to!  There will be on the following week.  Kim will be returning to school on August 26th. Then I return to my regular fall work schedule and twice a week updates in September! Nothing quite worked out the way it should have, but things are better. - Tiff

  1. Hmmm. In order to access Terran mapping software, Silver would need a web browser that works off of Terran standards. That would actually be rather simple to do and it does raise the question of how many programming languages have been ported to be useful on Cyantian machines. If C is one of those languages, then there might be a few holes in Cyantian security.

    1. It’s not impossible to create secure C code; it just takes more effort. Also, if they’re not using Terran devices but their own, they probably coded stuff in their own language (which would take some effort for different data types and architecture implementations) either for a web browser or a native client.

Or they could be emulating an “Andriod” OS to access the map software.

    2. Making a simple web browser is easy; the hard part would be the internet connection, since they can’t exactly get a standard cell network plan. I imagine they’re using a satellite or some other advanced tech like bouncing a connection through subspace or some form of technomagery to connect to an internet exchange point somewhere.
Also, it wouldn’t surprise me too much if they were using C, since it’ll compile to almost any architecture (for example, your car radio was probably programmed in C). C itself isn’t inherently insecure, that depends on the quality of the code and whatever firewalls they’re using, which would probably be pretty secure since they’ve managed to stay undetected so long.

      1. Well, C isn’t inherently insecure. It’s just the language that gets exploited most often since its security is reliant on good programming technique and not everyone has that.
I generally imagine that their method of connecting to the Terran internet would include an FTL communicator Earthside that routes all traffic to and from Mars through a local ISP from which they’ve discretely purchased a high-traffic account. I would expect the node to be ground-based since NASA keeps a very close eye on anything orbiting the planet and once they find a Cyantian satellite, it’s only a matter of time before the AMIB would attempt to pull it down. I also don’t imagine them illegally piggybacking on someone else due to the attention that such an act would cause.

        1. Actually, hiding a satellite wouldn’t be too difficult. All they’d have to do is shove a small decomissioned satellite or a piece of space junk into the atmosphere where it would incinerate, then replace it with one of their own that looked the same. It’s not like anyone but them can really go and check to see if it’s still the same satellite. :3

        2. While NASA is heavily monitoring the entire area with high-resolution radar?

        3. If only NASA had more funding; I can only imagine what we could be missing….
Anyway, I think we’re overanalyzing this. It /is/ supposed to be fiction, after all. 🙂 It automatically gets benefit of the doubt / future tech (cloaking?) / (techno)magic as explanations.

Also, your comment is missing a reply button for some reason, hence the reply to the previous post.

        4. The reply button thing is a natural part of the shout box to prevent a reply tree from being unreadable. Don’t worry about it.

        5. Forgive me, but I’m laughing because I could just imagine Silver jumping into this conversation about complex ideas as to how they do it, offering some super simple and low tech method by which she’s using the program. Something like, “Actually, I just downloaded Firefox (pun intended) when I realized we were on Earth and used Google maps.”

  2. … Marcus seems to have taken an interest in Cilke’s color pattern.

I guess Rad counts as a land shark, because they’re gonna need a bigger truck.

    1. Marcus is interested in every female anthromorph when I remember correctly XD

      1. True.

Well, almost true. He’s not interested in the felines, even if a certain feline is aggressively interested in him. 😉

    2. It may just be me but Marcus seems to be taking more interest in the smell than the sight.

  3. Oh god, can not wait to see something of Kaelis again XDDD

  4. The distinct possibility Marcus will experience the effectiveness of the tail’s defense systems has entered my mind. I’m not sure how peachy Marcus would be if that.. oh wait, he’d be very peachy with it…

  5. Considering how much information Moomle (sic) stores on their main servers all the AMIB would need is one subpoena to figure out where Silver is.

  6. “Moomle” is… giggleworthy 😀
