Very interesting to note the subsidization of slavery in this. It makes criminal-penalty slavery a state-paid-for matter, with the owner getting aid for the trouble of upkeep and damages. VERY interesting. I’d love to see the layout for this at a legal framework level (as in the actual wording, or something close, establishing the basis for what is acceptable and unacceptable as penalty, and the recompensation granted by the government).
Going back some 28 years or so for me, back in high school, in Constitutional Law class, we were tasked (after splitting the class in two) to argue one side for and the other side against slavery and whether under the US Constitution it could be legal. My side won the argument for it by making slavery a lot like this: a criminal penalty as opposed to something dictated by other circumstances. Something like this part of the comic thus fascinates me.
