Something feels a bit ‘off’ about her. Not evil off, just not quite on the full level. Her answers are rather evasive. She has not given a reason, as yet, to feel she had bad intentions to the child. But still, why is she being so evasive about just the who, what where and why?
Some abused kids find evasiveness to be the #1 necessary survival skill, so it becomes a part of them as deeply as any instinct. Some also find all matters of propriety are used to hurt them, so they have to make their own morality to have a chance of functioning at all.
Again, not really sure how much of Silowyi’s backstory figures into the timeline here, but for “reasons” the character has a very poor long-term memory and more or less lives exclusively in the moment. If she had kept the child long enough, she would have completely forgotten where the little one came from, and eventually come to believe that she was her mother. It’s possible that Silowyi only remembered differently because she was challenged by the crew. For all that, though, Silowyi would have gone to great lengths to make sure the child was cared for, even self-sacrificially. If Silowyi doesn’t go with them though, without constant reminders she would likely forget all about the child and the others in a few weeks.
I’d forgotten about memory issues. (Joke not intended, but now I’ve written it, I’m laughing! 😀 ) I used to build my characters with memory issues too, I do understand how it is.

“Another planet? I don’t know, that’s a long way,” said the alien. 😉

I think she messed up big time somewhere else and is afraid to admit it. Perhaps she did something her race considers criminal?

Like kidnapping a sentient pet? 😉
