Well, it COULD be that Darrik is more comfortable outside the city than Vin. He certainly got “out into the wilderness” quite a lot on Earth, while Vin probably didn’t join the boy scouts…
That is soo funny. He’s probably smelling the horse.
the toatal area of a human’s nasal canal that has scent cells is approximatly the size of a postage stamp. wheras a fox wolf or other canid’s has an area the size of a small washcloth that is loaded with smell cells.
Another interesting tidbit about human olfaction (or lack thereof):
Chromosome 11 has a large number of smell receptor pseudogenes, which at one time in evolution encoded smell receptor proteins but are now nonfunctional. Apparently, human ancestors didn’t need their noses for much and mutation accumulated and inactivated many of these proteins.
There was a psychologist recently who wanted to demonstrate that humans still had sensitive noses in spite of having fewer types of smell receptors and a minuscule olfactory bulb. What he did was blindfold (human) test subjects and then drag a piece of chocolate around a grassy field. All of the test subjects were able to follow the path of the chocolate by sense of smell alone.
Maybe not, but imagine the detailed health information those dogs can get, as well as current and recent moods, locations, and who and what they interacted with. Etc.
As for that psychologist’s test, well, yeah, it’s chocolate – they were probably being drawn to the trace amounts of it via ESP. :p
For whatever reason I can’t seem to recall what the name of Darius’ obsessed “fan” is. Someone mind telling a lazy coach potato such as myself?
This comic is flippin awesome. Most people become bored of making comics after the 3 year mark and quit. Glad to see a comic artist with devotion towards their line of work.

Good point. Personally I keep forgetting that their sense of smell is tens of thousands of times better than ours.
Also, this episode reminds me of when my dogs go into the woods after being in a city for a while. They go around investigating everything.

I wonder what’s gonn happen next. *I sense a comedic moment over the next rise*

It looks like Darrik finally unfloofed and got his sense of adventure back. I’ll call it a good thing.
I wonder what they’d name the Demon horse if they managed to tame it. Smoky? Burny? Toasty?

While Darrik seems to be relaxing and getting to know his surroundings better, Vin just doesn’t look happy.

So if he smells smoke, maybe there _are_ some flames involved when it comes to the Nightmare. I still don’t think he/she is the wailer.

he didn’t test me… my nose is absolute terrible.
But hey, we got colour vision instead!
And, if i recall where dogs tend to sniff themselves or each other, I don’t get really jealous…

I agree with Defenest – any other scent probably wouldn’t have worked, but hey, I’d follow chocolate up a wall if I was hungry… 😀

I spent 5-8 hours reading this comic and I have to say I’m impressed. Took me 3 afternoons to finish alien dice.
I would however like to see the story between Darius and his “secret admirer” developed a bit more.
